The Bow Festival comprised a four month programme of commissioned projects created by artists and residents in Tower Hamlets culminating in a week long programme of events and activities. Trolley Dollies / Michael Needham Michael Needham used the shopping trolley (Sholley) as a central theme to explore social and cultural narratives with older people around the Roman Road. Ladies from Bow joined a club for shopping trolley users, creating an informal network. They met, socialised and took part in a programme of events and activities, including a coach trip to the Sholley Factory in Clacton, and a Sholley convention. The Trolley Dollies took part in specially devised movement classes at the Idea Store and choreographed a dance performance with their Shollies, which they performed outside Safeways supermarket during the Festival. www.trolleydollies.org.uk Zooillogical / Ashley McCormick Ashley McCormick engaged children and staff at Old Ford Primary School in a research project examining a range of prejudices and predilections relating to the young and the animal kingdom. Sessions with the children explored how masks are used in performance, entertainment, rites of passage and shamanism, and how notions of identity are established through the body. Images of animals were found on the Roman Road. Children made 3D animal masks and enacted several tableaux vivant such as Zebras on the zebra crossing and Wolves at the meat counter in Safeways supermarket. These tableaux were photographed and reproduced as large scale vinyl prints, exhibited on school gates on the Roman Road. During the Roman Roadparty a market stall was dressed as a ‘cage’, and passers-by were invited to have their photo taken whilst wearing a mask of their choice. One Night Grandstand / The People Speak The People Speak were invited to create a project for a football Kickabout area on the Ranwell Estate, in Tower Hamlets, E3. The Kickabout, up till then in a state of disrepair and neglect, had undergone refurbishment and the project sought to engage young residents. Talkaoke sessions were hosted on the Estate to encourage debate and discussion. The consultation revealed distinct tensions and differences of opinion about encouraging greater use of the space and, in particular, from older tenants, a fear of young people causing trouble. 65 young residents formed their own teams to play in a 5 a side football tournament. The Kickabout was floodlit and the live action filmed and screened on three large screens above the pitch. Stadium sounds were played over the PA. Young people attended commentating workshops and then joined Phil Parry of BBC Radio One, to commentate live on the game. www.theps.net Lost and Found / Curious Performance on a canal boat with Leslie Hill, Helen Paris and Lois Weaver in association with The Public and Artsadmin. The work questioned assumptions about the benefits of urban regeneration. www.placelessness.com The Roman Roadparty - Festival Finale Space worked with local residents and artists to create a series of market stall activities, small projects and performances for 3,500 people who came to the one day street party. Bow-on-Sea / pH Obstacle Course – Ben and Holly Laundromat of Love / Laundrettas Three commissions invited artists to create walk-in participatory installations in the three cul-de-sacs off Roman Road Market – William Place, Ewart Place and Gladstone Place. Audiences enjoyed traditional Clacton style sea side entertainment, competed in a sculptural obstacle course and had a cup of tea with live artists the Laundrettas. Artists worked with local groups to create games and activities that were run from Roman Road Market stalls, and site specific performances on the street.
