Lounge Exhibition

Lounge Exhibition 7 December 2007 - 7 January 2008
Exhibition Launch and casino event - Thursday 6 December

SPACE and Hanover in Hackney appointed artist Camilla Brueton to carry out a three month commission engaging with residents in a number of sheltered accommodation schemes in East London.

Hanover in Hackney is the leading provider of housing and support services for older people in Hackney. They are currently renovating the lounges in their housing schemes, not only bringing them up to date in terms of furniture and appearance but also providing new facilities such as internet access, home cinema and exercise equipment.

Camilla Brueton uses photography, conversation and games to explore and capture change within the lounges and communal spaces of the different residential schemes. The process brings together images of the many aspects of communal space. She has designed a pack of playing cards which will act as a resource, mapping lounges old and new, whilst encouraging interaction - whose turn is it to deal? A casino style lounge installation will turn Hanover in Hackney's head office meeting room into a communal lounge for a month. At the opening on a poker table and dealer will bring the cards alive in an atmosphere that is in keeping with the challenging of perceptions of older people.

Camilla Brueton is interested in the relationship between people and buildings; how communal space is used and how this changes over time.

The SPACE Collaborations team creates and delivers collaborations, art programmes and strategies in partnership with Housing Associations, Development Trusts, Schools, Community Development Agencies and Local Authorities in areas in which SPACE has studios. These art programmes address issues such as: education and training, health, employment, young people, cultural diversity, the environment, regeneration and quality housing, whilst providing a commitment to quality arts provision.

Old Hat is Hanover in Hackney's creative arts programme, established to explore and challenge perceptions of aging, encouraging re examination of the role that older people play in society. It aims to create a more inspiring working environment for staff, promoting independence and creativity and enhancing quality of life for residents.

Exhibition 7 December - 7 January, Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm at Hanover in Hackney Head Offices, 18 london Lane, E8 3PR.

Supported by Hanover in Hackney, Old Hat and Thomas Sinden.
