One Night Grandstand
One Night Grandstand April - July 2006

Artists Mikey Weinkove and Saul Albert of The People Speak were invited to create a project for a football Kickabout area on the Ranwell Estate, in Tower Hamlets, E3. The Kickabout, up till then in a state of disrepair and neglect, had undergone refurbishment and the project sought to engage the young people and their families.

Talkaoke sessions were hosted on the Estate to encourage debate and discussion. The consultation revealed distinct tensions and differences of opinion about encouraging greater use of the space, in particular a fear of young people causing trouble.

ThePS and SPACE recruited 65 young residents to play in a 5 a side football tournament. The artists ran commentating workshops. The Kickabout was floodlit and the live action filmed and screened on three large screens above the pitch. Stadium sounds were played over the PA and Phil Parry of BBC Radio One, commentated on the games with the workshop participants.

The People Speak returned to the Ranwell Estate to screen the edited highlights during April 2006.
