Olympic Artists Symposium
Saturday 23 June 2007 10am - 4pm
Download the current programme
How are artists engaging with the Olympics? What work are they making and how is the changing political and cultural landscape effecting artists practices?
With so many artists in East London there is a wealth of work being produced in the areas and communities of the five Olympic boroughs. The Olympic Artists Symposium aims to provide a platform for showcasing different approaches being taken by artists and to highlight the breadth of artwork and creative practices currently involved with and/or being effected by the London 2012 Olympics. SPACE is hosting the symposium in partnership with the Museum of London, which is undertaking a major project to collect the Olympics.
The contribution of artists to both the staging and legacy of the Olympics is key to the cultural success of the games. How the creative community, particularly that of East London, is recognised internationally can both shape and reflect on the Olympics.
Stimulated by the Symposium will be a web-based forum for a continuing dialogue between artists and others interested in the creative dimension of the Olympics. The day includes key presentations from Mike Seaborne, Curator of photographs at the Museum of London, Tim Edensor, Senior Lecturer in Human Geography, Manchester Metropolitan University, and photographer Stephen Gill.Participants presenting projects include: Gabrielle Allen, Melissa Bliss, Caroline Christie and Bobby Lloyd, Phil Cohen, Alberto Duman, Brian Griffin, Hilary Powell, Toby Smith and Gesche Wuerfel
