MzTEK Workshops Present: Electronics for Absolute Beginners
took place on 23rd January 2010
Everything you ever wanted to know to build a circuit from scratch, but were afraid to ask!
Tutor Iain Sharp, a lecky pro, guided participants through the basics of how to get electricity to do what you want using a basic circuit that includes some pencil-drawn components!
m-Log workshop led by Owl Project plus special guest Leafcutter John Friday 25th and Saturday 26th September 2009
A two day workshop to build your own music controller out of a log. You design the functions, buttons, knobs and little unique designs that will personalise the way your log looks and the Owl Project will help you to build the electronics to complete your controller. The weekend includes all the materials needed to build & customise an m-Log to your own spec, a workshop in how to make the log work with software programmes and a special performance by Leafcutter John with his very own mLog
Come and join Julie Freeman introducing the technicalities of her latest work in the next MzTEK P2P show ‘n’ tell.
Julie recently returned from ISEA (International Symposium of Electronic Arts) in Belfast at the end of August, where she showed the piece Specious Dialogue III.
Specious Dialogue III consists of a pair of movable, sculptural concrete forms that house wireless audio playback systems. Mounted on pairs of swivel castors the forms are designed to be played with – pushed, rolled, kicked and shoved around the exhibition space. They are physical audio curiosities with personality.
Julie will be discussing the story of the work from the initial commission through to version 3. She will talk about how she built it from sourcing and constructing the concrete forms, to the writing of the Max>/MSP patch as well as the development of the piece through the sound recording and editing. She will be accompanied by sound producer Dan Grigson (Grantby) who will give hands-on hints and tips on voice-over recording, editing and formating.
SPACE and Culture Lab (Newcastle) teamed up to bring together a night of electronica with performances from:
Chip Tune Marching Band, Jamie Allen's circuitMusic, PixelH8, Jo Kazuhiro, Will Schrimshaw & Nick J Williams, Adam Parkinson, The Cane Toad Orchestra and Dave Griffiths.
DJ RE:ROOT (Marc Garrett) Part of the Furtherfield.org Media arts collective, gave us a blast of early electronica.
Chiptune Marching Band (CMB) is a public workshop and performance - During the workshop, participants were lead through a discussion on workshop concepts, and presented with the basic electronics knowledge required for creating a portably powered sound circuit. Participants were then grouped together as the Chip Tune Marching Band, parading the streets as a public performance and spectacle. At the end of our march, participants take their instrument home.
