Jost Munster - May Solo Show: Doppelganger

Jost Münster negotiates aspects of abstraction and representation, spatiality and surface in his paintings, sculptures and drawings. At the same time, he continually questions and pushes the potentiality, materiality and boundaries of the media used in his work. Münster's formal vocabulary is inspired by architectonic elements and urbanity: fragments of facades, silhouettes and individual geometric elements are abstracted and integrated into a layered picture plane, thus creating an allusion/illusion of a collaged space. Gestural marks collide with flat painterly fields; rhythmic lines meet a soft surface. Münster's compositions echo modernism, dominated by a constant non-linear flow of negative and positive space, foreground and background, inside and outside.

Preview Night Wednesday, May 2nd -6-8pm

Elizabeth McAlphine - The Map of Exactitude

Laurel Gitlen is pleased to present the first US solo exhibition by the
British artist Elizabeth McAlpine.

Employing cinema and photography to articulate and complicate the
textures and constructs of time, architecture, and space, McAlpine’s
minimal compositions depict these structures as much as they are built
from their components. Often positioned within the physical and material
concerns of filmic media — projectors, celluloid stock, cameras, and
paper — McAlpine’s sculptures, drawings, photographs and performances
are also shifting and sensual. While precise in their conceptual and
formal restraint, McAlpine’s enigmatic works also negotiate unstable and
fleeting conditions of time and subjective experience.
