The White Building is SPACE’s new cultural centre in Hackney Wick. Initiated and funded by the London Legacy Development Corporation, and managed by SPACE with generous programme support from Bloomberg, it forms part of a series of Olympic Legacy projects aimed to link the Olympic park and the surrounding area.
The canalside building facing the Olympic Park was originally a Clarnico sweet factory and more recently a print works. The conversion was designed by David Kohn Architects in collaboration with Michael Pawlyn of Exploration Architecture, specialists in environmentally sustainable design.
The White Building houses a large studio where visitors can meet artists in residence, 5 permanent artist studios, an Event Space for hire with views of the Olympic park, and CRATE café and micro-brewery.
The programme will include Permacultures residencies and People Power schools projects, both for artists working at the intersection of art, technology and sustainability. The project aims to draw attention to the high density of artists working in this area, to put the cultural offer of the area on the map and to bring together artists and local residents.
